Plan now for summer travel

Treat yourself and book today!

If only we were lucky enough to have a view like this from our living room window. I could happily sit and watch the waves everyday. We might not live on the beach but we do have lots of beautiful, white sandy beaches on our doorstep. It’s one of the reason we chose Bel-Air Gites as our home, because even just a couple of hours on the beach gives us an energy boost, whatever the weather.

Sound of the sea

At present, in the latest COVID-19 restrictions for our area, the beaches are not out of bounds but they are wonderfully quiet. Even in the peak season, our nearest one, Barzan Plage, is not busy and it’s lovely to just stroll along listening to the sound of the sea. When we’re feeling energetic we walk from there to Talmont-sur-Gironde and back, just to take in the view from Eglise Sainte-Radegonde, on the top of the cliff.

Where would you go?

So what would be your ideal location? If you could live anywhere you wanted would it be in a city, or by the sea? A huge mansion with it’s own golf course, or self-sufficient and living off the land? But then where would you escape to on holiday? Perhaps somewhere with beaches, ancient churches and beautiful chateaux. Water sports and woodland walks, hiking and cycling trails, golf courses and fishing – lots of activities for all the family. Well then, you must be thinking of escaping to the Charente-Maritime because we have got all of that, and much much more.

L’Oléron, the luminous isle

About an hours drive from Bel-Air Gites is l’Île d’Oléron, the largest French island on the Atlantic coast. It is nicknamed ‘Oléron la Lumineuse’, which literally means ‘Oléron the luminous’. It gets this name because it has a high sunshine rate, with annual hours of sunshine similar to the south of France.

But it’s not just the sunshine that brings people here every year.

The island is an incredible place to escape, to get away from busy towns and noisy cities. A trip to ‘Oléron the luminous’ can be a fantastic, fun-filled family day out. Or just to go relax, do nothing and recharge your batteries.

It’s an island of diversity. A favourite with families and children because of its wonderful fine sandy beaches, but also because of it’s charming villages, and range of family-friendly activities.

From surfing to golfing

Ile d’Oleron is a paradise for water sport lovers. There is something for everyone. From surfing and sand yachting, to canoeing and windsurfing. The anglers in the family will also be happy, as there are plenty of places for sea fishing.

And if you are into your golf there’s also a short, 9-hole course on the island as well.

“It is one of the very few golf courses in France where the seaside is part of the playing field. The golf of Oléron faces the ocean for approximately 2 km, between Boyardville and le chenal d’Arceau”.

Families can choose from excursions on foot, bicycle, boat or even riding a horse. Discover chalk cliffs, forests and marshland. Visit the imposing fort at Le Chateau d’Oleron, and the 46 m tall lighthouse at Chassiron, at the northern tip of the island.

Oléron, the luminous isle, is 32 km long and 8 km wide, and has 8 towns and numerous villages waiting to be discovered. Explore the narrow streets with rows of traditional fishermen’s cottages with green and blue-painted shutters. Paths and alleyways lined with tall, colourful hollyhocks.

Local Gastronomy

A trip to Ile d’Oleron isn’t complete if you don’t sample the local gastronomy. It will come as no surprise to find that the speciality here is seafood. The town of La Cotinière is the Charente-Maritime’s leading fish and seafood harbour. Oysters, mussels, sea bass and langoustine are widely available to buy in the local markets.

In addition to seafood, Ile d’Oleron is also famous for it’s wines. The vineyards are spread over 1730 acres, mostly in the north of the island. With twelve properties on the island producing a wide variety of pineau, wine, cognac and liqueurs. The producers here put that down to Oléron’s excellent growing conditions with diverse grounds, good climate and a lot of sunshine. So another good reason for you to visit this wonderful island during your stay with us at Bel-Air Gites in the Charente-Maritime.

‘Oléron the luminous’. Sun, sea and sand. What are you waiting for?
